What Are Crostini?
Let’s talk about crostini, shall we? These little Italian appetizers are like the life of the party on your taste buds! Crostini, which means “little crusts” in Italian, are essentially small, thin slices of toasted bread. They originated in medieval times when Italian peasants would eat their meals on slices of bread instead of plates. Clever, right?
Now, you might be wondering, “Aren’t these just like bruschetta?” Well, not quite, I’ll tell you a bit about the differences. While both are toasted bread with toppings, crostini are typically smaller and made from finer-textured bread. Bruschetta, on the other hand, are usually larger and made from rustic Italian or sourdough bread.
Crostini are super versatile and perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re hosting a fancy dinner party or just want a quick snack, these crispy bites have got you covered. They’re especially popular as appetizers or hors d’oeuvres at cocktail parties. Trust me, your guests will love them!
Essential Ingredients for my Crostini Recipe Trio
Now, let’s get down to business. What do you need to make the perfect crostini? It all starts with the bread. You want something that’s not too thick and has a fine texture. Baguettes are a classic choice, but I mainly like to use Italian Ciabatta breads as they tend to be a little larger in diameter.
Next up is olive oil – the unsung hero of crostini. A good quality extra virgin olive oil will give your crostini that authentic Italian flavor and help them crisp up beautifully in the oven or in a pan. Don’t skimp on this ingredient; it really makes a difference!
If you want to jazz things up a bit, you can add some seasonings or herbs. A sprinkle of salt and pepper is always a good idea, but feel free to get creative.
How to make my Crostini Recipe – 3 flavor-packed Toppings
Now for the fun part – toppings! The possibilities are endless, but let me share 3 of my favorites I created in Italy. Depending on your taste, you can always add or omit ingredients.
First things first, for about 6-8 People, cut about 4-5 Paninis or baguettes into 0.5-1cm thick slices and toast them together with some olive oil in a large frying or grilling pan. You can also drizzle some olive oil onto them and put them into the oven until golden and crisp.
After that, enjoy trying one of my following three Crostini Recipes.
Crostini Recipe #1 – Tomatoes, Grapes and Parmesan Flakes
This is a Crostini with a sour-sweet Topping, which is one of the most favorite among family and friends. Combined with the salty and umami Parmesan Flakes, you’ll get a super creamy and savory Crostini Recipe. So here we go..
- Cut about 500gr / 1.1 pound of fresh date or cherry tomatoes in half and put them together with a fair amount of olive oil in a medium, pre-heated frying pan.
- Add a good pinch of salt and stir well. Now add about the same amount of white grapes. You can pinch them with the tip of a knife so they will burst more easily while frying.
- Fry them together for about 30 minutes at medium-low heat, until you get a creamy-savory texture.
- Spread the mixture onto 1/3 of the toasted Crostini breads, add a pinch of salt and pepper and garnish with some lovely Parmesan flakes.
Crostini Recipe #2 – Nectarines, Onions, Parsley & Alici
This Crostini is as well as the one above, an interesting combination of sour and sweet flavors. If you’re looking for a vegetarian/vegan option, just skip the Alici’s, but I tell you, they’ll add a very nice twist.
- Stone the Nectarines and peel the Onions and slice both into 1-2cm thick slices.
- Fry them in a medium-hot frying pan together with some olive oil until caramelized and soft. Also, don’t forget to add a pinch of salt.
- Spread the mixture onto 1/3 of the crostini breads. Finely chop a handful of flat-leafed parsley and put on top of the crostinis.
- Garnish with 1-2 marinated anchovies (Italian Alici) and enjoy!
Crostini Recipe #3 – Mozzarella Cheese, Pesto Genovese and Pistachios
If you’re looking for a more cheesy and soft crostini, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with this one!
- Tear the mozzarella balls with your hands and distribute them onto 1/3 of the crostini breads.
- Now sprinkle some teaspoons of pesto genovese (freshly homemade if possible). Also add a little salt and pepper.
- Finally, chop some handfuls of pistachios and garnish the breads. Enjoy!

Tips for Serving and Presentation
When it comes to serving crostini, presentation is key. Arrange them on a nice platter or wooden board for that rustic Italian vibe. If you’re serving different toppings, group them together, so your guests can easily choose their favorites.
Don’t forget about drinks! Crostini pair wonderfully with wine – a crisp white or light red works well with most toppings. For non-alcoholic options, a sparkling water with a slice of lemon can be refreshing. And not forget a lovely cold Aperol Spritz!
Lastly, if you’re entertaining, make-ahead is your best friend. You can toast the bread and prepare most toppings in advance. Just assemble everything right before your guests arrive. This way, you can enjoy the party instead of being stuck in the kitchen. After all, that’s what good food is all about – bringing people together and creating memories!
